Then and Now – 2017 in Review
Happy New Year my Legion Comrades! It’s hard to believe that 2017 has already passed. But what a year it was in review! It began with the Post 136 Oratorical Contest and ended with another great Christmas Party. In between these events was our Post election in May where we filled all of our Post Officer positions. We are at full strength now and actively growing our membership. Thanks to the hard work of many we have ended the year at about 125 members. So you have renewed for 2018 and also found some new members for our Post. Thanks for all you have done to support us in 2017!
Last year we joined the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce in June and attended meetings to reintroduce Post 136 to the local business community. We also held our first Greenlight A Vet event at the new Walmart in Mount Pleasant on July 4th. We handed out brochures on how to participate and asked patrons to purchase a green light for their home to show support for our Veterans. The store sold out in about 30 minutes so we have now purchased our own supply of green light bulbs for future use this year. We had a visit from Past Department Commander Bob Scherer and his wife Shari, and received a Department update and ideas for the future. We made plans to hold a fishing tournament which was rescheduled to 2018 but led to our first Auction at The Rusty Rudder on Nov 4th which was an outstanding success thanks to your help and support!
We obtained licenses from the Secretary of State of South Carolina to hold fundraisers and conduct raffles in SC. The fishing tournament was rescheduled to October 2018 to provide more time to raise needed resources. The 2018 Fishing Tournament will now be held as a joint event with VFW Post 10624. The Auction we originally planned to hold as part of the fishing tournament became a separate event as our first Live & Silent Auction. Many of you participated in planning this event and also attended the event. We raised over $6,200 which will be used for Veterans Support and the Post Building Fund. This event has ensured that we will have needed funds for our programs in 2018.
Thanks to Fred and Jean Timmons our Post 136 Auxiliary Unit was organized this summer and has been chartered. The ALA provided outstanding support at the Live & Silent Auctions and we could not have held such an amazing event without their help. We will support their growth and events during 2018 as President Jean Timmons leads the Unit. Please let your spouse know that the Post 136 ALA Unit welcomes them as a new member!
We also held our first Executive Committee meetings and Officer Calls last year. Our leadership team is stronger now as we begin to plan for Post events during 2018. This year we will reach out to our members, local Veterans and our Community. Look for improved communications initiatives and our Vet to Vet Program to stand up. We will beginning planning for our next fundraisers, membership drives and community events.
We will establish a Strategic Planning Committee to focus on better planning and communications, membership initiatives and outreach, and to form a committee to begin work on our next Post building. We will also continue to actively support the VA Hospital as volunteers and through our coffee service. This year we will also be providing clothing kits to Veterans in need during their stay at the VA Hospital. We have designated $3,200 for this purpose to be used to provide these clothing kits to Vets!
At this time we are actively planning for the 2018 Oratorical Contests which include a Post, Quadrant and Department Contest held during Jan-Mar 2018. Fred Timmons is heading up our Oratorical Contest Committee – Please give him a call if you would like to help out – (843) 860-1735. The Post 136 Oratorical Contest will be held on Jan 20th. We will definitely need help on the day of the contest this month and also next month for the Quadrant Contest. We have already reached out to local high schools and hope to have even more students participate this year than participated last year.
In 2018 look for us to continue working on a Post Honor Guard, planning our next fundraisers and standing up our Strategic Planning Committee to oversee our planning for fundraisers, membership outreach and search for a new building for Post 136. Taking better care of our Veterans will be our primary focus this year while also reaching out to our Community. Let’s start by having dinner together soon at the VFW Post!
We will need your ideas and leadership this year! Your help and support is essential to us being successful. Please consider how you would like to serve in 2018. You should consider serving on a committee or leading one. Perhaps you would like to serve the Post as an Officer. To have a great year we need everyone’s help and support!
So please give me a call when you read this and let me know how you can help in 2018!
For God and Country!
Commander Art Horn, Moultrie Post 136 – (843) 437-4732
